Product Info
The North Norfolk Whelk Boat sailing experience offers a hands-on introduction to traditional coastal sailing aboard a big, heavy, and exceptionally safe 30-foot wooden lug-rigged boat, built in 1952. Suitable for exploring the larger salt marsh creeks in comfort, the Whelk Boat allows guests to move peacefully through tidal landscapes shaped by wind, weather, and the rhythms of the sea.
Led by experienced skippers, this Norfolk sailing experience accommodates up to 10 guests, providing plenty of space to socialise, relax, and enjoy time with friends. Participants can take part in handling sails, navigating channels, and observing tidal conditions, while still having room to sit back and absorb the surroundings. Trips include a stop for breakfast or lunch/supper, with hot tea or coffee, allowing time to pause in the marsh, admire abundant wildlife, and enjoy gentle swimming when conditions allow.
The salt marsh environment is rich in plant and bird life. In summer, the creeks and banks are edged with flowering sea lavender and samphire, while a variety of waders and coastal birds—from curlews and redshanks to oyster catchers and marsh harriers—can often be seen feeding or flying nearby. This makes every journey through the marsh a peaceful, immersive wildlife experience.
From sheltered creeks to open tidal channels, the Whelk Boat offers an authentic connection to traditional sail and the natural world. Suitable for small groups, the experience prioritises learning, observation, and immersion in the coastal environment, making it suitable for both newcomers and experienced sailors. Routes are guided by wind and tide and shaped in discussion with guests, ensuring every sail is relaxed, unique, and memorable.
