Sailing Trips Wells-Next-the-Sea

Sailing Trips from Wells-Next-the-Sea and Blakeney

Discover traditional sailing on one of England’s most distinctive coastlines. Our sailing trips from Wells-next-the-Sea and Blakeney offer hands-on voyages aboard restored wooden Norfolk fishing boats, sailed under traditional tan sails once used by local fishermen. These are authentic journeys — shaped by tide, wind, and centuries of maritime knowledge.

Sailing from Wells-Next-the-Sea

While closely associated with Wells-next-the-Sea, our sailing trips also depart from nearby Blakeney Harbour, a historic working harbour that provides exceptional access to some of the wildest coastal waters in England, including Cley and Morston.

Why Wells-Next-the-Sea Is Ideal for Sailing

Wells-next-the-Sea sits beside one of England's largest areas of wild salt marsh, a protected landscape shaped almost entirely by tide and weather. Much of this environment remains free from other boats and human traffic, creating a rare sense of space, silence, and immersion.

From Blakeney Harbour, we sail directly into a network of tidal channels and open marsh stretching towards Cley and Morston, areas largely inaccessible by road and lightly travelled even by water. These shallow, shifting waters favour traditional wooden boats and reward careful seamanship rather than speed or technology.

The Waters and Routes We Explore

Our routes follow the dynamic salt water tidal creeks of the North Norfolk coast, adapting daily to tide and conditions.

Typical sailing areas may include:

  • Tidal salt water channels winding through wild salt marsh

  • The open waters between Stiffkey Blakeney, Cley, and Morston

  • Sandbanks beyond the harbour

  • Quiet inshore waters rarely visited by other vessels

Strong tidal flows and shallow depths naturally limit traffic, meaning many trips pass through areas where we often see no other boats at all.

We may stop in sheltered waters, offering guests the opportunity for a wild swim — a bracing, memorable experience in clean tidal water, surrounded by open marsh and sky. Swimming is always optional and carefully managed with safety as the priority.

Traditional Boats, Working Sails, and Simple Food

Our fleet is made up of wooden fishing boats, restored and maintained using traditional methods. We sail under tan sails, the distinctive reddish-brown canvas once treated by Norfolk fishermen to protect against salt and weather.

Every sail includes locally sourced food, prepared to suit the day and the tide:

  • Breakfast sails are served with eggs and bacon (or a vegetarian alternative)

  • Lunch sails include homemade soup, fresh cake, and Norfolk cheese with chutney

We also serve Sandringham apple juice and coffee shipped under sail from South America, continuing the tradition of moving goods by wind rather than fuel wherever possible.

Food is shared aboard, adding to the sense of fellowship and slowing the pace of the day.
