Product Details

The Coastal Exploration Co’s (CEC) knife

The CEC knife is based on the Royal Navy's standard issue pocket knife with marlin spike, sheep's foot blade, and can opener - forged in Sheffield steel. It has a rich history, dating back to around 1910. It was the first to feature a marlin spike, and later on included a can opener during World War I. The knife’s stainless steel blades resist corrosion, and the handle ensures a secure grip. Even today, the CEC’s version of this knife stays true to the original Royal Navy design, maintaining those cherished British maritime traditions. We also sell a two piece knife for those not required to splice a line!

A marlin spike is used primarily to untie stubborn knots, splice rope, or create a temporary handle for pulling on a rope with a marling spike hitch. To untie a knot, insert the spike into the knot to create space and loosen it. To create a marlin spike hitch, form a loop with the rope, pass a bight of the standing part through it, and insert the spike through the bight to tighten.

Knife Sales – Legal Requirements

Knives are age-restricted products and may only be purchased online by individuals aged 18 or over (or the legal minimum age in your country). Age verification is required at checkout and again may be requested on delivery with valid photo ID. We do not sell knives to minors. Orders may be refused or cancelled if age or legal requirements are not met, or if age verification fails. By placing an order, you confirm that you meet the legal age requirement and that the item will be used lawfully and responsibly.

Basic Knife Safety:

  1. Use the Right Knife for the Task: Choose knives suitable for rope work, food prep, or emergency use.

  2. Secure Your Grip: Always hold the knife firmly, even when the boat is moving or wet.

  3. Cut Away from Yourself: Keep your body and hands clear of the blade path.

  4. Use Stable Surfaces: When possible, cut on a secure surface; avoid cutting in your lap or on unstable decks.

  5. Carry Safely: Store knives in sheaths or secured pockets; never carry loose knives on deck.

  6. Be Aware of Movement: Account for boat motion and waves; avoid using knives when the boat is unstable.

  7. Store Securely: Keep knives in designated, easily accessible but safe locations.

  8. Maintain Sharpness: A sharp knife requires less force and is safer to use.

  9. Avoid Distractions: Focus on the task; avoid using knives in rough seas or when distracted.

  10. Respect the Tool: Use knives only for their intended purpose; do not use them as pry bars or tools for non-cutting tasks.
