The Coastal Exploration Co Hooded Smock is a heritage-inspired sailing garment, designed for adventurers, sailors, and coastal explorers who value tradition, sustainability, and life aboard classic North Sea vessels. The card pattern for the smock is taken directly from the Yarmouth Oilskins archive and has been recreated using modern lightweight waxed fabric—not available when the original was made—perfectly suited for contemporary sailing while retaining historic style.

Made by Yarmouth Oilskins in Great Yarmouth, and produced in Dundee by one of Britain’s oldest wax cloth mills, the emulsified waxed cotton is lightweight, breathable, and weather-repellent, with a soft tumbled appearance that develops a beautiful patina over time. Durable and practical, it is washable, line-dryable, and lightly ironed, with a dedicated wax spray available to rejuvenate the wax finish when needed.

The unlined smock features a three-piece hood, internal waist draw cord, sturdy brass zip, and deep welt pockets with buttoned storm flaps, all designed for functionality during life aboard our traditional fleet of North Sea sailing vessels. Every smock comes with a Coastal Exploration Co and Y.O. patch, reflecting our heritage, maritime craftsmanship, and commitment to quality.
